In recent years, the approach of teaching English through English (TETE) has become the mainstream educational policy in Taiwan. The TETE program emphasizes students’ adaptability to English as the medium of instruction and willingness to use English for learning and communication. This article uses an elective course “Reading European and American Novels” of Shilin High School of Commerce as part of the our school’s TETE plan to demonstrate how it is adopted not only to enhance students’ four language skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing, but also to improve their recognition and understanding of the origin of Western Civilizations. It further illustrates how to implement TETE strategies and digital technology, incorporating resources from the Ministry of Education’s “Cool English” online learning platform—particularly the digital adapted readers in the high school reading section and materials from Scholastic related to Greek civilization. The course is proved to benefit high school students in developing their multicultural soft power, enabling them to engage in multi-level cognitive learning, with both teachers and students experiencing various stages of teacher-led English instructions, student self-study, collaborative learning within groups, and collaborative learning between groups.
